What Is Fibromyalgia?

Unlike many other painful conditions, fibromyalgia does not cause visible inflammation or joint damage on imaging or blood tests, which is one reason it is so frequently misunderstood and underdiagnosed.

Fibromyalgia is believed to involve a process called central sensitization — in which the brain and nervous system amplify pain signals, making the body hypersensitive to stimuli that would not normally be painful. It commonly occurs alongside other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and irritable bowel syndrome.
